Doug Bowen and his wife Lisa, came to us from Virginia Beach in 2009, where they lived for 13 years following Doug's retirement from the U.S. Marine Corps. Their son Craig, daughter Kristi (and her husband Doug) along with grandsons Brandon and Eli all reside in Halifax County.
The Bowen's Marine Corps experience provided them the opportunity to work with many congregations from coast to coast, as well as overseas. They have enjoyed the privilege of meeting and working with many wonderful Christian people of diverse backgrounds and cultures.
With every move or change of assignment the Bowen's were actively involved in their church. Doug has shared the pulpit at many congregations throughout the years, serving as a deacon on three occasions and has led the education ministry as well as fellowship and outreach programs for various congregations.
Doug states, "With our initial move from home and family Lisa and I realized immediately the importance of our church family. As we moved from Ohio to our first duty station in Cherry Point N.C., we were so appreciative of the congregation in that area ( Newbern Church of Christ) as they graciously welcomed us. They made us feel like we belonged, which gave us the sense of 'home.' Just as the Lord intended."
As the Bowen's traveled from one duty station to another they said they found the same feeling of home and acceptance from God's people in every congregation. Having that strong connection made the frequent moves far less difficult.
Doug continues, "It's essential for all of us to know the importance of finding and belonging to a church family, with common goals and beliefs, where you know you are loved and needed. That is what I hope and want others to find when they visit the South Boston Church of Christ, sound doctrine, and the sense of belonging."
